Frequently Asked Questions
▷ Why are there two models this year?
Each year we try to respond to the needs of our customers. While many have been happy with the "take what you need" model and want an even longer season, some wanted more flexibility. Now you can choose whichever option works best for your family!
▷ How much do the options cost? How long is your season?
Both options span our full 24-week season, May 20-October 28, 2020.
Full membership is $600 for all the vegetables your family needs for the entire season.
Farmstand credit can be purchased for any amount over $300 and can be redeemed for any Julian Farm product (veg, flowers, meat, eggs, prepared foods).
▷ How much will I receive each week?
CSA members will be welcome to take all the vegetables you and your family need for that week. A typical weekly share might contain:
- 1-2 bags salad mix, spinach, or head lettuce
- 1-2 Brassica (broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts or Kohlrabi)
- 1 bunch salad topper (green onion, radish, turnip)
- 1 root bunch (beets, carrots)
- 1-2 bunch of cooking greens (kale, chard)
- Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Summer Squash, Peppers
- Herbs of your choice
- 2-3 Fresh Onions
- A Seasonal Selection (peas, green beans, melons, corn, winter squash, sweet potatoes)
CSA members also receive a 10% disount on any other product at our farmstand. Pre-paid farmstand credit can be used on any of our products with a 5% discount.
▷ How does the CSA work?
Each week we set up at the pick-up location with our selections. You come and pack your own box with whatever you think you can use for the week. It’s that simple!
▷ Do you deliver?
We are glad to deliver a CSA share for $200 for the season (total of $800 for a CSA share for the season).
▷ Can I pay in installments?

▷ Do you take requests?
Yes! Just let us know if there is a specific vegetable or variety that you would like us to grow and we will do our best.
▷ Are you organic?
We consider ourselves beyond organic, in that:
- We use 100% natural methods.
- All of our fertility is natural and as local as possible--we will never use a synthetic fertilizer.
- We focus on soil health, encouraging healthy ecosystems and growing practices that regenerate the earth instead of use it or destroy it.
- We never use GMO or pre-treated seed. At the end of the day, the best certification is transparency and a strong relationship between grower and consumer.
▷ How do you keep bugs away?
We use insect netting and sometimes we pick them off by hand. But mostly we enlist a predator bug army! That is, we invite other bugs to eat the bugs that bother our crops. By creating a holistic ecosystem--an integrated environment where there is balance between predator and prey--we can stop most insects from being an overwhelming burden. We achieve this by planting many different kinds of crops, by encouraging soil health, and especially by planting beneficial borders in and around our gardens. These plantings encourage the presence of predator bugs which in turn take care of populations of “pests” that would otherwise give us fits. Also, by planting a diversity of crops we can avoid most of the infestations that force large monocrop operations to use pesticides. Lastly, we have changed our expectations. We have been trained by the modern grocery store food system to expect perfect looking produce--at the expense of taste, nutritional value, and impact on our earth and local economy. So we don’t expect to harvest 100% of what we plant--don’t the bugs in our world need something eat? After they are very valuable to our well-being!--and we don’t expect everything we do harvest to look like a the platonic version of whatever it is. While we certainly strive for quality and believe we deliver a beautiful product, we don’t mind when each fruit is a little different and tastes just like itself. And we encourage our customers to take this approach, too.
▷ What kinds of seed do you use?
We use non-GMO and non-treated seed and seek to use organic seed when we can. We use commercial seed for increased yields and disease resistance, but we also plant many heirloom varieties (especially tomatoes, melons, and sweet corn). We are committed to seed diversity and are members of Seed Savers Exchange, which encourages the preservation of heritage seed varieties in North America and Beyond. In 2020 all of our seed comes from the following vendors:
- High Mowing Organic Seeds
- Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
- Seed Savers Exchange
- Johnny’s Selected Seeds
- Biker Dude Puna Organics
